I had such a great time painting these guys. They were an experiment in Blanchitsu using Contrast and Oil paints. I'm really pleased with how they worked, and also how effective the bases are (supplied by the lovely Printed Players).
Rather than the normal Bloodspawn, I decided I just wanted to use the Scylla Anfingrimm miniature because it's just so much fun.
I took these in our local league. I figured Frenzy was fun. I figured Khorngors were for wimps.
I regretted my choices.
Although I did come second overall, but I found the lack of choices incredibly frustrating - it was hit, or hit. That can be fun, but with limited options (and a league ridiculously heavy with Orcs), it was challenging.
I also suffered more casualties than any other non-stunty team over the course of the league. Those linemen are so super squishy!
Before oils
The actual method is quite simple to replicate.
The models were undercoating with a zenithal spray, up from a pale tan colour, up to pure white. Then, I blocked in the basic colours with GW's excellent contrast paints.
Once dry, they got a very important coat of varnish (this is essential, as white spirit does not react well with contrast paints, even when dried.
Then, we get to slather the models with oil. I wet blended from burnt umber, through red, and into orange and yellow.
These were then stripped back with white spirit and cotton buds, leaving the paint only in the recesses.
